An innovative solution to water shortage Kenya Our region suffers from a decrease in water availability, caused by deforestation in the nearby Aberdare Ranges and ‘floriculture’ draining the waters of Lake Naivasha. One solution is to conserve more rain water when it falls. So our group has developed an innovative method for water harvesting which re-uses the old plastic sheets from flower farm greenhouses to ‘shed’ the water into surface dams. Send Email |

Biogas is Best Kenya With the leadership of our physics teacher, Mr Ngumi, we developed a working model biogas generator. This model used various organic materials to create biogas in a 50-litre drum. The biogas produced could light a flame and heat water. We developed a drama and songs to take the message on renewable energy sources to the community. Send Email |

Cleaning the Nairobi River and Ngara Market Kenya Our group went out to the nearby Ngara Vegetable Market and the adjacent Nairobi River. We filmed interviews with local residents and business people, including footage on the serious pollution of the Nairobi River and waste problems in the market area. We edited the video footage and developed a presentation, which we used to create awareness amongst school and community on these issues. Send Email |

Climate Scene Investigators Kenya The Bahati Foresthas suffered severe deforestation over recent years, causing higher temperatures, less water and a decrease in food production. On Valentine’s Day 2009, our group visited the forest and ‘fell in love with the environment’! Since then we have focused our attention on agroforestry as a means to redress the concerns. We also developed a sawdust ‘jiko’ (simple cooker) to help reduce the need for fuel wood. Send Email |

Improving our environment for all Kenya We feel that we have developed a comprehensive project that deals with a range of environmental and economic issues in the region surrounding our school. We have addressed the water shortage by introducing recycling of waste water irrigation of vegetable crops to increase food availability for students. We have planted a range of fruit trees to increase fruit production and help tackle climate change. We have also put up litter bins in the school. Send Email |

Innovative Ways to Recycle Plastics Kenya We identified the Kawangware dump site in North West Nairobi as a blot on the landscape and a serious environmental hazard. Working as a team, we collected, cleaned and cut up hundreds of plastic bags, then sowed cushion, duvet and soft toy covers, stuffing them with the recycled plastics. We even upholstered an armchair using the same recycled materials. We developed a drama around the issues of waste management and took this to out to the surrounding community to create greater awareness on these issues Send Email |

Nakuru International Climate Change Ambassodors Kenya Calling ourselves Nakuru International Climate Change ambassadors(NICCA) we developed a steam -powered ‘jiko’ (simple cooker) and a ‘cooking basket ‘. Our drama showed that using renewable energy sources could impact on the need for fuel wood and thus reduce deforestation. Send Email |

Our Planet is in Peril Kenya Nakuru is the main town in Rift Valley Province and suffers problems of urban pollution. Our group developed a number of innovative methods to help tackle the issue and create community awareness on the links to climate change. We used recycled waste paper, compressed as paper mache, to make notice boards and we placed sculptures made from clay and plastic, at strategic points around the town, to create awareness. Recycling ‘grey’ water to increase food production Kenya Matuu HGM is a girl’s boarding school and the used water from the dormitories contains many toxic chemicals. We devised a system which piped the water through a concrete cleaning bath containing various filters, ash and sand. The clean water was then used to flood-irrigate an area of land to produce kale, spinach and other vegetables. These foods were harvested, cooked and eaten by the girls. We created a drama and song, in four languages, to educate the community on the importance of water. Send Email |

Saving The Mau and Tackling Climate Change Kenya The environment around our school has changed drastically over the past 20 to 30 years. Rampant deforestation has caused the climate to become dryer and more unpredictable. To tackle these issues our group developed a dramatised Maasai dance to create community awareness and used innovative techniques, such as making a model clay coffin, to highlight the need to reduce our dependence on timber.

The Ice Melt on Mount Kenya Kenya Nanyuki Boys High is situated close to the foothills of Mount Kenya. Our multi-faceted project devised methods to adapt to increasing temperatures and decreasing water levels, caused by climate change. This included ‘fire-balls’ to replace charcoal for cooking and re-using old paper cement bags and glass to make sandpaper. Re-aforestation is a key factor, and we created a drama on this issue, with a video and posters to support our awareness raising campaign for the whole school community. Send Email |

The saving grace of Aloe Vera Kenya Areas around Emining school have become seriously degraded due to deforestation, causing severe soil erosion. Our group explored the issues with the community, questioning district officials and elders. We then replanted an area with Aloe Vera, to stabilize the soil, conserve the land and generate income for the school. We made a video that clearly demonstrated the whole process and its value to the local community. Send Email |

The ‘Ikenge’ Trap: Less is More! Kenya Kyua (pronounced Chewa) school is situated in a semi-arid area of Kenya, now suffering from less water and lower crop yields, due to climate change. Our project used the ‘ikenge’ (a large basket-like trap) to catch squirrels. These squirrels are many in number and eat the newly planted seeds, so reducing crop germination. The squirrels caught were then eaten as a nutritious food. We created a drama around the issue to educate the community.
